yesterday, slept a couple hours with my head on the desk at the office. woke up with a slightly stiff neck that went away in no time. last night, slept in my own bed on my lovely comfy pillows. this morning, wake up with a stiff neck that hurts when i turn my head. it's taking much longer to go away. i'm sitting here pondering whether a hot pad would help.

Welcome to "owning a body that is mid-twenties or older". When you're a kid, almost all minor pains come and go within a day of the injury. But now you can expect that the worst pain from any muscular misapplication will occur at least one, and as you get older, two days after whatever incident caused it. Don't know why exactly. Might have something to do with dwindling amounts of HGH or similar growth hormones that allow the very young body to regenerate faster. But that's just a personal theory. Tom Cruise told me it's because I'm not "pure in thought and at one with a bad science fiction writer." Who knows? All I can say for sure is, now that I'm in my mid-forties, if I overdo it at the gym or with yard work I wake up the next day a little stiff. But the following day, I wake up and toddle around like some evil AARP gnomes have hidden my walker.

i'm too young for that. *looks little and innocent*
(and i've since concluded the stiff neck was a result of falling asleep with my hair still up, which i almost never do.)
