Orchid on Bark, originally uploaded by grundy12.

It's that time again- the time when the orchids move outside for the summer. They get a good soak and a 'power wash' to knock any bugs off, and then they get set on the tables. (After that, the orchid room gets cleaned out.)

Look! It's the French one! And it's flowering! For the first time since I brought it home! (In other words, this is the first time I've reflowered it!)
Yes, it really does deserve all those exclamation points. In addition to it being SO pretty, I'm very happy about coaxing it into flowering on this side of the Atlantic.

The flower is almost open, and I've found another spike developing on the same plant. Bl. Mem Bernice Foster has two spikes coming (second time flowering this year!) and Bc. Sunny Delight looks like it may also be working on a spike or two. *fingers crossed*

Meanwhile, the soon to be orchid room in the basement is nearly ready...

It's a good thing this orchid happened to open last night, because it's rainy and rotten today as we wait for Hanna to go through, so I don't think there would be too many other opportunities for good pictures. Unless I bake. Which I might. Anyway, compare this flower to the flowers the same plant had when I got it back in April. It's hard to believe it's the same plant.

Birthday surprise
Originally uploaded by grundy12
First, check out my surprise birthday flower. (Not a new plant. One I already had but didn't realize was about to flower because it was hiding behind many other plants.) The plant is Lc. Eva x walkeriana, and the flower is much smaller than usual- here's what it looked like last time it flowered.

Second, I did take pictures yesterday. I even tried to take photos of local scenery. But I still have issues standing up straight, so all those ones turned out lopsided. So you get a photo of the latest development in local flavor-Blinker Custard now has an incredible range of soft serve flavors.

For real!

So many pretties and not enough money or space to get them all...The ones in the picture to the right ("Greenhouses") are all ones I wouldn't buy anyway. Not because they're not pretty, but because they're either really big, finicky, or both. You need a greenhouse if you're going to do those.

I got two new orchids, one little, one not so little.
C. Caribbean 'Orange Bowl' and Slc. Charming Jewel.

I also have one in mind for next time I'm in an orchid acquiring mood...I just hope they have it. (I saw it in the stock greenhouse, wherein reside the orchids that are not for sale. But it's called Rocket Burst-how could I not? Even if it didn't have totally gorgeous red flowers, which it does.)
