Sweden 1 - Spain 2
Jun. 14th, 2008 11:59 amTuned in just in time for the national anthems. And the captains shaking hands. Ljungberg and Casillas in one shot. I think my ovaries just exploded.
( First half )
Well. That incident at the end means we'll be hearing more about controversial decisions by the referees. How that wasn't called is an utter mystery. You didn't even need the replay to see the foul.
( Second Half )
The Swedish supporters are gutted. SILLY Swedish sub! Mellberg was about to take his shirt off and you stopped him! (Someone give Svensson a hug, he looks so sad.)

Group C summary
Jun. 13th, 2008 04:38 pmAfter 2 games:
Holland are definitely through. No one can catch them. The big question is who else is going through, and any one of the three remaining teams could. I don't fancy Romania's chances against rampant Holland, but even if Romania lose, a draw between Italy and France would see them through. If Romania lose, and there is a winner in Italy-France, that winner advances.
So. Italy = not dead yet. But it will all depend on Donadoni's lineup. Based on his selections to date, I'm not confident.
I just hope that France don't go through. ANYONE BUT FRANCE!
More Group C news:
Predictably, Italy is angry about that incorrect offsides call. Romania, meanwhile, insist Italy were the lucky ones.
Also, Radoi is probably out of the tournament after that collision with Rat-poor sod broke his nose and needs eye surgery.

Holland 4 - France 1
Jun. 13th, 2008 02:46 pmRemembered to flip the TV back on in time for lineups and anthems.
( First half )
Right. Should imagine Van Basten is going to tell his boys they need to go on the attack in the second half. A 1-0 lead doesn't give them the game. Get a second goal and then they can sit back and defend.
No clue what Domenech will say-I don't understand the way his mind works at all.
( Second Half )
WOW. France were just rocked. Holland have their defensive weak spots, but if they keep this up, I won't be surprised to see them in the final!

Italy 1 - Romania 1
Jun. 13th, 2008 12:11 pmMissed lineups and the first 7 minutes, as was out to lunch with my grandparents. Am also having to censor my natural (somewhat profane) reactions, as Gram is sitting in the living room watching with me.
( What I saw of the first half )
( Second half )
Well. That was painful. However, I think the blame for this one is square on Donadoni.

Group B summary
Jun. 12th, 2008 04:42 pmTeam | Points | W | D | L | GF | GA |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Croatia | 6 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 1 |
Germany | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 2 |
Austria | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
Poland | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
Yes, in theory, the second place spot is up for grabs. But I think it would take a miracle for either Austria or Poland to win their remaining game. Austria got their draw today through sheer dumb luck. Even if Germany have another off form day and lack Schweinsteiger, I don't see Austria stopping them. The only thing less likely is Poland beating Croatia. Poland's defense only didn't see a goal earlier than stoppage time because the Austrians couldn't finish. Croatia do not suffer from that problem.
I'm calling Croatia and Germany moving on with 9 and 6 points respectively.
Croatia 2 - Germany 1
Jun. 12th, 2008 12:02 pmMissed the lineups, but not the kickoff. Hoping Germany win and Budan gets injured. (Yes, I am a vicious wench.)
( First half )
Frakking hell. There had better be changes. Germany are a shambles. SCHWEINSTEIGER! And if Gomez can't learn to keep his ass onsides, Neuville and Kuranyi can't make it worse.
German commentators are not happy either.
The German National Team has had more problems with Croatia's quicker counterattack than they could be comfortable with. The defense looked overwhelmed at several points, while not much came together in the attack.
That's Spiegel's summary of the first half.
( Second half )
Germany really have no one to blame but themselves. Löw should not have waited so long to make his substitutions. Schweini should have been on in the first half. And shoving that Croatian man was just stupid on his part. Fortunately, Germany should still be able to manage Austria without him.
Germany are not out of it yet. They can still advance provided they and Croatia both win their final group matches.

Group A Standings
Jun. 11th, 2008 04:43 pmWith 2 games played, here's Group A:
Portugal are now definitely moving on, regardless of whether Switzerland manage to salvage their pride. The Czechs and Turks play each other next, with their fates in their own hands-winner goes on, loser goes home. In the case of a draw, I'm not sure what happens, seeing as they're equal on goal difference-anyone know what the decider would be?
PS-Um, ESPN, you're morons. That wasn't a Polish player you just showed in the spot about Austria-Poland. That was Lukas Podolski, who plays for Germany
edit Not 100% on this, but from the sounds of what the ESPN talking heads are saying, it would go to penalty kicks if the Czechs and Turks draw.
Also, Chelsea have just confirmed that Phil Scolari is taking over.

Jun. 11th, 2008 02:05 pmPortugal icon cause I have no dog in this fight, as it were.

AND I AM BEING RIPPED AWAY FROM THE FOOTBALL TO GO GET MY MOTHER'S CAR FROM BEING SERVICED AT THE DEALERSHIP. NOT HAPPY.

Yay, Baros is playing!
( First half )
( Second half )
Portugal are now on top of the group with 6 points. The other game this afternoon, Switzerland-Turkey is between the two teams on the bottom of the group with zero points each.

Spain 4- Russia 1
Jun. 10th, 2008 12:47 pmI haven't been trying to update during the game. I decided that bringing my laptop anywhere near the TV was a bad idea (extra heat). And what do you know, the TV did NOT overheat the whole first half!
( First half )
( Second half )
Wow, that was the David Villa show.
I'm also happy to hear that the Spain-USA friendly helped the Spanish coach fine tune his team (it seems to have done good things for us too.)
ESPN, a few gripes:
-what's up with the crappy aerial shots? I don't mind them on replays, but for the love of all that's holy, do NOT use them during live play!!
-Quit it with those annoying info banners at the bottom, especially when the ball is in play on the bottom half of the screen! Jeez, at one point you had dueling info banners at the bottom overlapping each other!
-could we please, please have reaction shots of Casillas when Spain scores? (This one is just me, but the other points probably annoy the crap out of everyone else too.)

Holland 3 - Italy 0
Jun. 9th, 2008 03:03 pmBah. The setup is such that I can't really keep up with the live reaction thread over at
ahh_serie_a and watch the game. So my thoughts, let me tell you them.
( First half )
Ok, what's the Don gonna do??
( Second half )
And that's that. UGH. I suppose it could be worse. Italy could have done this against France, in which case, I'd have to fly over there to beat Chiellini with Cannavaro's crutches.
Donadoni has two problems to solve, stat. First, the backline. It's not a mess, but it's prone to amateur moments in which it falls apart utterly. Second, who to play up front. It's not like Italy lack options, but Donadoni apparently hasn't found a combo that works.

Austria 0 - Croatia 1
Jun. 8th, 2008 01:07 pmI missed the first half due to not paying attention to the time. I saw the last thirty seconds.
Second half:
Ok, I've only been watching five minutes, I have no clue what went on in the first half, but...
Austria are looking a bit of a joke. :(
ESPN, why must you insist on popping up banners with trivia info on the bottom half of the screen when the ball is in play there?
~78 Austria aren't looking such a joke now, but they're still lacking polish and coordination. If they can keep up the pressure, they might get lucky and pull out a draw.
Final: Unsurprisingly, Croatia get the win. I predict Austria crash out without winning or even drawing a single game.

Portugal 2 - Turkey 0
Jun. 7th, 2008 03:46 pmFirst half thoughts:
-WTF, ESPN? What's with the sound?
-Ok, they apologized.
-Nice tight shirts, Portugal (hello, nipplage!)
-The Turkish defenders go down as easily and often as C.Ronaldo used to
-Servet's knee injury ~6:30 looked painful.
-Offsides is not Portugal's friend
-Portugal are looking the stronger team, but Scolari isn't looking happy. (I wouldn't either if I were him.)
Second half thoughts:
-Um, this isn't going to cut it, Turkey.
-First goal, very nice. Little flicks on and knowing where your teammates are. (And a bit of help from the Turkish defender.) Well played, Portugal.
-Turkey never really looked like they were going to get it back after that. They looked threatening once.
-Portugal really put it away with the second goal.
Why did Nuno Gomes have to leave? /petulant

Lithuania - Italy
Jun. 6th, 2007 08:41 pmOnly saw intermittent snips frm the first 20 minutes, I was having streaming issues. Finally got StreamerOne up and running (I HATE Micro$uck.)
0-2 at halftime, and hoping i ragazzi improve the scoreline in the second half.
But OMG, Donadoni, can we ALWAYS play Quagliarella from now on? Two goals. Two QUALITY goals. Those were both gorgeous shots.
