interesting how the american media has completely failed to mention this.
the leaked british government memo
in plain, even vulgar, english: the bush and blair governments sold their respective countries a raft of shit. they wanted that war and didn't care what lies they had to tell to get it. and the american government compounded their transgression by having NO. FUCKING. PLAN. their complete and astounding lack of planning, forethought, or understanding of political and cultural realities in iraq has led to the very scenario that many who spoke against war warned of: the continuing and escalating insurgency in iraq, which is now threatening to spill over into flat out sectarian civil war. quite aside from the toll on the iraqis, which i realize the us government doesn't give a hoot in hell about, american soldiers are still over there getting shot up and dying because of that lack of planning. well done, us. bravo. take a bow and chalk another one up for the leaders of the the free world. iraq can join the long line of our foreign triumphs since world war ii: vietnam, iran, cuba, chile, guatemala, indonesia, nicaragua, somalia...it's notable that half the time, these "interventions" create more problems for us down the line than they solve.
is it really too much to expect that the idiots in the us government learn from history and stop drawing up simple, short term plans to address complex, long-term problems? of course, for them to learn from history, we would first have to start teaching honest, self-critical history. then we could move beyond "they hate us because we're americans" to "they are angry at us because of past actions on our part, which we undertook because we perceived to be in our (short-term) self-interest, and during which we completely neglected the cost to non-american civilians." i realize that's a little complicated for some neocons, but that's how it is out here in the real world. just because we prefer to live in ignorance doesn't mean the rest of the world forgot about history and ignores current events.
