but this was an awesome anti-war protest. we need more out of the box thinking like that. the war has to come home to these smug, self-absorbed, selfish bush acolytes before they will do anything about it. just listen to janet: "so they were intentionally getting in people's way. i don't think that people have lost touch or forgotten [about the war]. i don't think this is the way to get people to connect." translation: how fucking dare they inconvenience me?
the inconvenience is exactly the point of this protest: the people of iraq can't react like janet red voter. they don't have a choice about putting up with the inconvenience of us military patrols. the difference, of course, is that the inconvenience can be deadly to the people of iraq. the us military patrols in iraq have real weapons, not imaginary ones. the bullets are real. the danger is real. the death is real.

bild. that fine publication one of my teachers (in germany) once referred to as the "newspaper of the german illiterate." i read it for the football. and for the hilarity that they often package with the football (last week there was the article which enlightened bild readers on what men in various countries around the world say at climax.)

today they have the first part of a multi-part interview with some football wags. (that's wives and girlfriends, for anyone who hasn't heard the acronym coined by the british tabloid press.) i couldn't help myself. i clicked. after all, the fascinating lead was a quote from one of the women in which she says what most sensible people think: footballers are paid too much. the astonishing part is that in this interview, another wag argues this point with her. jermaine jones' girlfriend feels that her man earns all that money. after all, he could get a career-ending injury at any time, and that's the end of that. her sympathetic response to grit, the wife who admits that footballers earn too much, pointing out that construction workers run the same risk working 8 hours a day for 1800 euro/month? "too bad."

obviously not a highly accurate quiz. i am not, in fact, belgian. (i did the quiz more than once, in fact, and it's pretty insistent on the belgian thing. and the irish. and the italian. after that, the order varies.)
