*whimpers*

is it some wierd south jersey thing to expect that the deli counter SLICES cheese, rather than just hand you a quarter pound chunk of cheese? cause i thought that was the whole point of a deli counter. they slice things with their shiny slicing machines.

for those who are confused, my head is hurting due to a discussion i had with my officemates. deli counters in this country only slice meat. and neither kate nor matt has ever heard of provolone.
me: "it's cheese. it's italian. it's good for sandwiches."
kate: "it's like she's speaking in some alien tongue. words are coming out and she thinks they're english, but they make no sense."

Every deli I've ever been to has sliced cheese as well as meat. But I am a daft American. :)

matt wants me to tell him what happens if i ask the girl at the sainsburys deli counter to slice cheese for me. apparently it's just not done here. kate looked at me funny and said "but it would dry out."

But... but.... how do you make yummy cheesy sandwiches? *baffled* Are you supposed to slice it yourself? You haven't the machinery! No London flat comes with an industrial cheese slicer, does it? (If it does, I'm moving right now, 'cause how fun!)

i'm a bit puzzled as to how to make yummy cheese sandwiches too. the whole point of the cheese was to make cheese sandwiches. possibly even grilled cheese sandwiches. but as you said, london flats don't come with industrial cheese slicers.

If you solve this mystery, I beg you to share. This may trouble me all day. :)

I used to work on a deli counter in Somerfield back in Ashby and no, we do not slice cheese. I don't know why. It's just not done. The point of the deli counter, i always guessed, was if you wanted a specific amount then you could get it. I worked there for over a year and noone ever asked me to slice any cheese.

I guess it is an American thing then.

Also, we didn't sell provolone. Although I have vaguely heard of it.

but...the deli counter has those lovely industrial slicers which cut things in uniform fashion. why would you not use them for cheese? if i try to slice this cheese myself, i am pretty sure i won't get lovely thin slices good for making grilled cheese sandwiches.

happily, there is an italian deli here in lewisham, so i'm pretty sure i can find provolone when i want it.

We only had the one slicer on the deli I worked on and if we wanted to slice cheese we would've had to have bought another slicer due to accursed health regulations.

Also, people just never wanted it sliced.
