open letter
Mar. 15th, 2007 01:17 pmdear livejournal,
i'm pretty sure that once upon a time (a time that wasn't so very long ago) you used to send me email notifications when people responded to comments i'd made on journals other than my own. it was nice, as i could then respond to people in a timely manner without having to mentally keep track of what entries i'd commented on and then check them obsessively to see if anyone responded to me. it also meant i didn't overlook comments i might have responded to, or be rude by just not answering someone who's asked me a question. i've checked my account settings, and i appear to have every possible variation of notification checked in the affirmative. so what the flipping hell? give me my comment notification emails, dammit!
no hugs for you (more like a swift kick you know where),
me
yeah, lj isn't telling me when people comment, and in an effort to actually write my thesis (as opposed to just whinging about it) i'm not checking lj obsessively. so if i fail to respond when a response seems like the thing, i'm not being rude, at least, not on purpose.
oh, for firefox users, did you know there's an extension you can get that will tell you when your friends page has been updated? this is good for your productivity if you're me and used to seize any opportunity to get out of writing by "checking to see if there's anything new on lj."

tempting though that is...
some people have remarked that i have been remarkably quiet about current events/politics lately. i'm not sure what they want me to say. you can only scream into the wind for so long. take today's TOP STORY! 9/11 mastermind confesses!!!!1!
no, i really don't give a rat's ass about this non-starter. there are far too many reasons to question both the timing of this news release and the substance of the purported confession.
shakespeare's sister expresses her thoughts on the matter more eloquently than i do, but i largely agree with her.
so if you're among those wondering, the reason i haven't been commenting on all the stories about how the bush administration is a bunch of corrupt and/or incompetent morons, pyschopaths, narcissists, fascists, and outright criminals whose idea of government is a throwback to the patronage systems of hundreds of years ago, the answer is that it's not news. news is, by definition, new. this has been going on for 6 full years now. wake me when anything is actually done about it-that would be news.
